Recording Techniques
'Indian Summer' was recorded on 'Session 8' using a variety of drum samples placed against a 'tabla and tanpura' sample that runs throughout the song. This creating a drone in the key C#. These samples (except for the guitar sample) were produced by R. Russell on his home computer using a drum sequencer called the 'Hammer Head Rhythm Station' that allows you to import and use your own drum noises in creating drum beats.
A vocal sample appears at the beginning of the song using an effect know as a 'gapper' (from the wave editor 'SoundForge 4'), the sample also appears at the end of the tune in its original form along side the 'gapper' version.
The guitar used was a Fender 'Stratocaster' through a Marshall 'JCM 600' guitar amplifier with considerable gain. This was recorded using an ATM 27HE Audio Technica Dynamic Hyper Cardoid microphone positioned a few inches from the amp's speaker.
A Lexicon Reverb unit set on the pre-set 'drum plate' was used for reverb and an Alesis Midiverb on the pre-set 'Flange 51' was used for the Flange effect on tracks 1 and 2.
